2 in 1: Crush and compact rock with Hamm VC compactors

One of the Hamm innovations that will be presented at bauma China 2016 in Shanghai is the 3625 HT VC compactor, a powerful, heavy-duty roller featuring a special crushing drum. This compactor can carry out two tasks simultaneously: rock crushing and compaction. This optimises the entire construction process, which ultimately saves time, resources and costs.

The letters VC in the name of the compactor stand for ‘vibration crusher’. With its vibrating drum, the machine crushes materials such as quarried rock or concrete rubble while compacting it at the same time.

Quick-change system provides flexibility

The VC drum is equipped with 150 cutting tools for effectively crushing rock and other construction materials. They are mounted in special tool holders that enable rapid replacement. The Hamm product range currently includes two different cutting tools: a standard cutting tool and a special mining tool for heavy-duty tasks. The geometry of the tools and their integrated carbide tips are specially designed for materials of varying compressive strengths.

The design of the tool holders is well thought out and ergonomically optimised. For instance, care has been taken to ensure that the cutting tools in the holders are protected from dirt – an essential prerequisite for quick and easy replacement. The tools are not destroyed during replacement, but can be used repeatedly until their wear limit is reached.

Applications in earth work, rock engineering and construction materials recycling

The range of available tools for the VC compactor with crusher drum ensures an exceptionally broad spectrum of applications. Fitted with the cutting tools, the crusher drum breaks apart coarse aggregates, including limestone, sandstone, granite or other minerals of comparable compressive strength. At the same time, the material is compacted to a great depth. Another application is the homogenisation of rock.

A further area of use is construction materials recycling. Here, the VC compactor can be deployed very efficiently to crush concrete rubble.

Potential applications include working in rocky terrain: pre-crushing or loosening of rock, preparation and maintenance of access ways in quarries, as well as track laying in tunnels or surface mines.

Optimise processes – save resources

In the majority of the aforementioned applications in earth work and rock engineering, the use of the VC compactor results in a reduction in transport movements and simplified handling on the construction site. This is not only very environmentally friendly, but also helps to streamline processes. For example, if hard rock is simultaneous crushed and compacted with a VC compactor, considerably fewer excavators and crushers are required. This simplifies the construction process, reduces fuel consumption and saves a great deal of time and costs.

Another example is pre-crushing of rock prior to its removal by cold milling. Experience in tunnel building and surface mining shows that upstream passes with a VC compactor can significantly increase milling capacity.

Also convertible for use as a padfoot compactor

Not least, the VC compactor can also be deployed as a padfoot compactor. To this end, Hamm has developed special inserts for the quick-change system which enable the VC drum to be converted into a padfoot drum. This enables the highly efficient compaction of cohesive soils, for example. Compared to a conventional padfoot compactor, this application is particularly efficient in compacting highly abrasive, fine-grained minerals. This is because worn padfoot inserts can simply be replaced, instead of changing the entire drum.

Hammtronic for exceptional climbing ability

In all applications, the compactor benefits from the Hammtronic machine control system, which is integrated as standard. It ensures low operating costs by optimising engine output and adjusting the operating status of the travel and vibration drives to ambient conditions, and enables tremendous climbing abilities of more than 60% – with continued crushing and compacting throughout.

Easy transport

Hamm has developed a special apparatus to transport the crusher drum. It enables the machine to travel and manoeuvre on any surface, without damaging either the tools or the surface.

Heavy-duty equipment included

The compactors are fitted with earth mover tyres as standard. This ensures dependable progress, even in difficult terrain. In addition, Hamm always equips this model with a ROPS cab, reinforced articulated joint and reinforced undertray. The front section with the 2,220-mm-wide drum differs from that of a standard compactor as it features a reinforced suspension, a drive with more than 30% extra torque, and a fixed unbalance. This means that the compactors are perfectly prepared, in every respect, for the tough job ahead.

Available immediately in China

The 25-tonne 3525 HT VC compactor is available immediately for the Chinese market. It is equipped with a 155 kW engine and meets Tier 3 requirements, making it both extremely powerful and fuel-efficient.
