Hamm roller 3520 P is more efficient and economic in comparative studies done with other three brands

In order to study the excellence of the equipment available in the market for soil compaction, Terram, Engenharia e Infraestrutura, Pillar Group and Consórcio Encalso - S.A. Paulista – with the support of Ciber Equipamentos Rodoviários – tested four different brands of rollers available in the market for this purpose, being three different models (of two different brands) and the fourth is a Hamm 3520 P.

The comparative study was carried out in two construction sites, one of them on Avenida Dr. Antônio João Abdalla, in Cajamar, and the other on Rodovia dos Tamoios, in Paraibuna, both in the countryside of São Paulo, in the month of July, 2013.

According to Juliano Gewehr, product specialist at the Wirtgen Group, the purpose of doing the test was to show how much more productivity 20 ton rollers can bring to the consolidation step. “In the case of a recycling job, it is fundamental to have this type of heavy equipment, because the recycler has high productivity and 11 ton rollers cannot keep up with the speed of the recycler. In addition, a 20 ton roller saves approximately 40% fuel when compared to two 11 ton rollers”, Juliano explains.

TEST IN CAJAMAR

OBJECTIVE

To compare the performance of the vibrating compacting one drum Hamm 3520 P rollers and other two models of other brands.

LOCATION WHERE THE TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT: Cajamar

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE EXPERIMENTAL SECTION

Material: Cohesive soil whose deposits are on average 39% silt, 26% sand, and 35% clay (silt-sand-clay soil). These are well graduated soils with broad variation of the particle dimensions and with a thick fraction maintaining the original shape given the small transportation distance.

COMPARATIVE METHOD

The equipment was placed side by side and the evaluation of performance of the equipment was done through the compaction performance criteria, fuel consumption, and superficial closure in the compaction process. Compaction control was done through Hilf method and the trials were carried out by laboratory professionals from Alpha Eng. Consultoria Ltda. The closing was registered by photographs, verifying the aspect of the pass and the superficial finishing of the padfoot on the basis of the lane for each piece of equipment.

RESULTS IN 30 CM THICKNESS:

Compacting: In this section, the study demonstrates that in normal working conditions the performance of the compacting roller by Hamm had the highest compaction degree, with the smallest number of passes compared to the other brands tested. It was possible to see that, in relation to model A and to model B, Hamm 3520 P has 15% and 7% more in the number of padfoot, respectively. Thus, it guarantees a largest area of contact with the soil, enhancing compaction.

Consumption: (data obtained during operation):
Model A consumed 11.8% and model B 9.1% more than Hamm 3520 P.

RESULTS IN 40 CM THICKNESS:

In this section, equipment of models A and B (of other brands) were not tested because they do not operate in such conditions, which does not meet the demand. Therefore, compaction trials were done to test the number of passes for the 3520 P roller.

TEST IN PARAIBUNA

OBJECTIVE:

To compare the performance of the vibrating compacting one drum Hamm 3520 P rollers and one model of another brand.

LOCATION WHERE THE TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT:

On Rodovia dos Tamoios (which connects São José dos Campos to Caraguatatuba, on the coast of São Paulo)

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE EXPERIMENTAL SECTION

Material: Crushed stone soil on subgrade with addition of water in 30 cm depth. With addition of binding agents (cement)

Length: 180 m (stakes 2171 to 2180)

Width: 12 m

Ramp: 3%

Thickness of the layer: 30 cm

Optimum humidity: 16.1%

METHODOLOGY:

The equipment was placed in parallel on the right external edge and lane axis, and the evaluation criteria were the compaction performance and fuel consumption. The practical tests were done with verification of the density of the samples collected by the bottle in the sand method. The compaction trials were done by laboratory professionals of Consórcio Encaso - S.A. Paulista.
At the closing, photographs were taken to register the aspect of the two passes to verify the superficial finishing of the padfoot on the basis of the lane for each piece of equipment.

EQUIPMENT CHARACTERISTICS:

RESULTS:

Compaction: The study showed that the Hamm roller model 3520 P had a superior performance in comparison to the competitor model, reaching a 20% performance of superior compaction, in addition to the economy of 4 passes when compared to the model C on the same section of the lane. Hamm roller did 10 complete passes – 20 passes – and model C 12 complete passes – 24 passes.
