The Nelson Piquet International Speedway in Rio de Janeiro is being razed. The Rio de Janeiro Olympic Park is going to be built in the area covering 1,180,000 m². Since early July, when the work started, a Kleemann MR 110 Z Evo mobile crusher has been in operation at the site.

The machine is being used to crush the entire built area in the speedway, such as the track, bleachers, and buildings. The waste generated from the demolition will be recycled. “The material will be crushed, analyzed in a lab, and used in the very construction as base and sub-base”, detailed Renan Leite, director of Global RCD, the com- pany hired by the construction consortium, in charge of the crushing. He further explained that the equipment was chosen as it is the only one fully suitable for this kind of service.

The Machine’s Unique Features

Standard items, like the vibrating trough placed after the breaking system, are among the crusher’s unique features. The trough prevents iron from being dumped directly on the conveyor belt, which compromises the entire operation.

Crushing “in loco”

Jorge Sales, Kleemann’s Regional Sales Consultant, explained that the machine breaks down mate- rials on the site, which results in considerably lower costs in terms of transporting cons- truction and demolition waste to landfills.

“That type of service makes it possible to save on freights, transportation, and taxes on the aggregates to be used in the construction as asphalt base and sub-base. That happens because after being recycled in our crushers, Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) are in perfect conditions to be used for those purposes”

“Adding value to recycled products is only possible when we have greater autonomy over the operation and control of fine matter. Such is the proposal of the Kleemann crushing system for CDW recycling. The machines go beyond merely crushing demo- lition waste and yielding large, lamellar end-products. They deliver greater compaction in asphalt applications and are suitable for various other uses”, explained Cláudio Caobianco, General Manager for Wirtgen Brasil. He noted that the machine technology has quite peculiar technical features. “The system allows us to carry out primary and secondary crushing in a single processing stage. Such versatility makes it possible to recycle not only CDW but also asphalt”.

The Impact Processing System

According to Jorge Sales, another advantage relates to the impact-based processing system. “By operating that way we can achieve greater grain size diver- sity, cube-like end-products, and consequently more business opportunities for our clients”.

Kleeman’s sales consultant further highlighted that the machine has been successfully processing CDW, but it is still early to make a more detailed diagnosis of the operation, such as, for instance, the total volume of materials crushed. Once CDW processing is complete, the next phase, i.e. asphalt processing, is going to begin.

Qualified Team

Before they started working at the construction site, crusher operators were trained by highly skilled Ciber and Wirtgen Brasil technicians. The experts are currently monitoring the work on a regular basis.
