HAMM, the world’s leading manufacturer of rollers for earthwork and road construction, is a member of the German WIRTGEN Group. HAMM rollers for the Chinese market have been manufactured at the WIRTGEN China factory in Langfang since 2012. At bauma China 2016, WIRTGEN China and HAMM are now presenting another product ‘made in Langfang’ – the 13-tonne tandem roller HD O138V with oscillation technology. Furthermore, HAMM is bringing two innovations from its popular HD CompactLine to Shanghai. In addition to the HD 14 TT, a compact 3.5-tonne rubber-wheeled roller, the manufacturer will be presenting a chip spreader for rollers from 2.5 tonnes – an attractive option for significantly improving the initial skid resistance of roads.

New in China: Compact rubber-wheeled roller HD 14 TT

Without doubt, HAMM’s most successful roller series worldwide is the HD CompactLine. Customers in China, too, appreciate the compact machines for their power and versatility at a good price-performance ratio. At bauma China 2016, HAMM will be expanding its product portfolio for China in this series with the HD 14 TT, an extremely compact rubber-wheeled roller. The machine is similar in construction to the compact tandem rollers from HAMM. Its wasp waist design and spacious operator platform provide all the benefits of the HD CompactLine, such as perfect visibility, easy operation and high productivity – all at low operating costs.

The HD 14 TT is outfitted with three rubber wheels on the front axle and four rubber wheels on the rear axle. With an operating weight of 3.5 t and working width of 1276 mm, the machine is ideal for use on confined construction sites. It can compact both asphalt layers and soils. Surfaces are sealed particularly effectively thanks to the kneading and rolling effect of the rubber wheels.

The 3-point articulation is also advantageous as it ensures even weight distribution and a small turning radius, accompanied by exceptional driving comfort. The compact rubber-wheeled roller is powered by a 35 kW engine. It can be optionally equipped with automatic engine-off function, which turns off the unit during longer periods of inactivity. This saves operating costs and helps to protect the environment.

Chip spreader available for HD CompactLine

The HD CompactLine chip spreaders are also new on the Chinese market. Following main compaction, these attachments mounted on the rear of the tandem rollers are used to spread chips on the asphalt surface while it is still warm, and roll them in. This brings about a significant improvement in initial skid resistance.

The precision spreaders are available in various sizes to match the operating weight and working width of the rollers, and are operated from the driver’s seat. The spread rate is infinitely adjustable, and a special diffusion grille helps to ensure a remarkably even distribution pattern.

Chinese-German co-production of heavy tandem rollers

In addition to showcasing its compact rollers in Shanghai, HAMM is also presenting the articulated tandem rollers in its HD series, which are manufactured in China. These all-rounders are suitable for construction activities on highways and other large areas, as well as in cities. They combine the proven HAMM compaction technology with numerous smart solutions in the fields of operation, comfort, safety and servicing. The machines are the outcome of close cooperation between engineers from WIRTGEN China in Langfang and from HAMM at its main factory in Tirschenreuth, Germany. “The roller series meets the requirements of our market in every detail, offering exactly those options that are important in China,” explains Wang Zijie, Head of Development and Design at WIRTGEN China.

There have been three models to date in the HD series from Langfang: the double vibration rollers HD 128 (12 t) and HD 138 (13 t), as well as the 12 t oscillation roller HD O128V. In response to the great demand for oscillation technology, HAMM is now launching the 13 t roller with a drum width of 2.14 m as an oscillation roller as well, the HD O138V.

Bright prospects

A good overview of the surroundings is a key feature of HAMM rollers. Thanks to the intelligent design of the frame, tanks and cab, drivers always have a full view of the drums and the sprinkler spray bars – from any sitting position. In addition, in both the HD 128 and HD 138 models, the driver’s seat can be rotated in both directions with little effort. This gives drivers a perfect view of the drum edges and the machine surroundings. High-quality lamps on the protective roof and bright lights on the cabin also help to ensure an excellent view of the area around the roller. This ensures high levels of quality and safety.

Self-explanatory operation

Self-explanatory operation and the clear display of all important operating data using unambiguous symbols make it extremely easy to compact with HD series machines from WIRTGEN China. The display does not use any text at all, meaning that no language skills are required – a major advantage and a contribution to overall safety.

Easy transport, easy maintenance

Intelligent design makes it easy to transport the machines with a protective roof, because the roof can be folded manually in a few quick steps. This is supplemented by straightforward maintenance and servicing: Thanks to the user-friendly layout of filters and grease points, regular check-ups are quick and uncomplicated.

Oscillation – the faster compaction

With the new HD O138V, customers can now take advantage of HAMM’s oscillation technology on a 13 t roller, too. Like the HAMM HD O128V, the new roller is equipped with one oscillation drum and one vibrating drum. With oscillation technology, compaction increases particularly quickly because the oscillation drum directs tangential shear forces into the surface, while remaining in constant contact with the ground. The combination of continuously acting static load and changing dynamic shear forces results in faster, better and gentler compaction. Moreover, the amplitude and thus the compaction power are automatically adapted to the current rigidity. Rather than using electronics, HAMM achieves this effect through the intelligent application of the laws of physics.

And there is another plus point in favor of oscillation rollers: They work very efficiently, even on cooled asphalt. Thus, the timeframe available for compaction is wider compared to vibratory compaction.

Minimal vibration, flat surfaces and high skid resistance

Furthermore, oscillation technology is exceptionally gentle and quiet because the drums do not lift off the ground during compaction, which prevents vertical strokes. This allows oscillation rollers even to be used for compaction close to vibration-sensitive buildings or installations (e.g. railway lines or historic buildings); other areas of application include dynamic compaction on bridges and compaction above underground structures such as parking garages.

Because oscillation compaction does not involve any strokes on the asphalt, it results in extremely flat surfaces. Compaction with continuous ground contact also ensures high initial skid resistance as the drums already remove the bitumen film on the surface. Last but not least, thanks to the special movement that prevents damage to the cold asphalt, oscillation also optimizes compaction at joints with existing road surfaces.
