Following the successful market launch of their latest generation of small milling machines, Wirtgen is now presenting an entirely new developed model also in the large milling machine class. The W 150's main hallmarks include high performance, intuitive operation, ergonomic design, and intelligent control systems that make work easy for the machine operator. The new powerful cold milling machine W 150 from the world market leader can be equipped with milling drum assemblies of 1.20 m, 1.30 m or even 1.50 m milling width to ensure that customers benefit from maximum flexibility in everyday operation on the job site. The W 150 offers a maximum milling depth of up to 32 cm.
The W 150 has replaced the W 1500 in the uniquely broad product range of Wirtgen GmbH, which comprises a total of 15 cold milling machine models in all performance classes and for all types of application. It allows customers to choose the machine best suited for their applications from the most modern portfolio of cold milling machines worldwide.
The innovative cold milling machine W 150 offers many different fields of application: It is the ideal candidate for everyday milling work on all kinds of surfaces, large or small. The new large milling machine proves its worth in particular when milling large surfaces, fine milling, or removing entire asphalt pavements at full depth. Its compact overall dimensions (6.55 m long, 2.45 m wide, 3.0 m high) and exceptional manoeuvrability, owed to its large steering angles, make it an ideal candidate also for use in urban road construction projects or on space-restricted job sites. In addition to all that, optionally engageable automatic tracking of the rear axle guarantees highly precise milling even in narrow radii.
In addition to the machine’s impressive manoeuvrability and speed, maximum productivity is yet another result of thorough engineering at Wirtgen GmbH. The W 150 houses a powerful 6-cylinder Cummins turbo diesel engine with an output of 350 HP which complies with the stringent exhaust emission standards stipulated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA, Tier III) and the EU (Stage III a).
The compact all-rounder has an empty weight of just 18,700 kg when fitted with the 1.20 m wide milling drum unit, which usually dispenses with special transport permits and allows the machine to be available quickly even for short-noticed construction projects.
The W 150 is equipped with the world’s first 4-fold full-floating and height adjustment system as a standard machine feature. The system ensures that the machine aligns parallel to the road pavement automatically both during the milling operation and in transport mode. It also guarantees reliable traction of the W 150's four crawler track units, enabling the machine to always adapt to ground conditions dynamically, and ensuring permanent ground contact and precise adherence to the selected working depth during the milling operation.
The ergonomically optimized concept of the new W 150 is based on the field-proven design of Wirtgen's state-of-the-art family of cold milling machines, and considerably simplifies one-man operation of the large milling machine: Non-tiring operation is supported by the control functions integrated into the right-hand armrest that are operated easily and intuitively. The machine's “wasp waist” – the specially shaped central part of the machine chassis – ensures that the operator has a perfect view of the milling edge, enabling him to steer the machine with pin-point precision from the individually adjustable driver's seat. This free-view concept produces significantly better and more effective milling results without the need for time-consuming manual reworking.
Yet another unique feature of the W 150 is WIDRIVE, the newly developed machine control system that simplifies all control functions. Following extensive field trials, many requirements and requests from experienced machine operators were incorporated in the development of this system. All machine functions are centrally governed by the WIDRIVE system and are activated for the operator's benefit in accordance with conditions prevailing on the job site. Networked control of the machine's diesel engine, milling drum drive, travel drive, conveyor drive, water system, 4-fold full-floating height adjustment system and LEVEL PRO levelling system is unique in Wirtgen's portfolio of cold milling machines. Significantly reduced fuel consumption relative to the asphalt quantities milled at improved overall milling performance is just one of numerous verifiable results. And the many field trials with machine operators have clearly shown that WIDRIVE, being an innovative control concept, makes work a lot easier in everyday operation on the job site.
Environmental emissions have also been reduced to a minimum. Low noise emission levels of the soundproofed engine protect both the operator and his immediate surroundings. The machine's exhaust emission levels fully comply with all environmental stipulations, but are reduced even further by the intelligent WIDRIVE machine control system which, for instance, ensures that the engine is always operated at the maximum speed required in any given working situation.
The new W 150 can be supplied ex factory in three different working widths. Many different requirements can be met with the optional milling drum units of 1.20 m, 1.30 m or 1.50 m working width. The milling drum units can additionally be pre-installed with the FCS Light package which is part of the tried-and-tested Flexible Cutter System and greatly facilitates changing of the milling drums for fine milling, making them much more economically efficient. Incidentally, these FCS milling drums are part of the milling drum family used in the W 100 F, W 120 F and W 130 F, and can therefore be used collectively for several Wirtgen machine models, as required. Additional milling drums with numerous different tool spacings are on offer in Wirtgen's comprehensive portfolio of cutting technology, ensuring that the W 150 can be used for a broad range of applications.
The W 150 is, of course, also equipped with the innovative, proprietary LEVEL PRO levelling system developed by the company itself. Levelling is one of Wirtgen’s core competences, and is therefore a particularly impressive feature in the new cold milling machine. Highlights from the mature range of functions of the LEVEL PRO automatic levelling system include sensors that can be selected individually during the milling operation, practical memory functions, intelligent communication and networking of LEVEL PRO with the machine control system, two control loops, as well as a robust, clearly structured and field-proven display that indicates up to three different sensor values. The system’s high-quality controller unit is permanently mounted in the machine's electrical cabinet, and is therefore protected from weather influences in the harsh everyday conditions on the job site.
Yet another performance benefit offered by the W 150 is the intelligent system for loading the milled material, with the primary conveyor being installed at an angle to the milling drum. Increased loading rates improve the overall milling performance, making the W 150 an efficiently operating and highly powerful large milling machine. The W 150 can be supplied with three different loading conveyor options: A standard conveyor, long folding conveyor or short folding conveyor meet any requirements that customers may have, with the belt speed being adjustable in accordance with conditions prevailing on the job site. The conveyor can be slewed by 60 degrees to the right and 45 degrees to the left, enabling even large 5-axle semi-trailers to be loaded swiftly and conveniently.
